Gaetano Antoniazzi, 1825-1897

Gaetano Antoniazzi (1825-1897) became interested in making instruments when he was studying with Enrico Ceruti. He also eventually became one of Giuseppe Ceruti’s (1785-1860) students. Gaetano traveled to Geneva in 1864, and returned to Cremona in 1866. His entire family moved to Milan in 1870.

He is an important luthier in the history of violin making. He also taught the skills he learned from the Ceruti brothers to his two sons Riccardo (1853-1912) and Romeo Antoniazzi (1862-1925), who eventually taught their knowledge to their own students, which included Leandro Bisiach (1864-1945).

Among all his works, the only ones signed were made between 1870 and 1890, or the ones made when he worked for Leandro Bisiach. His instruments are stylistically part of the Cremona school. His varnishes are a yellowish brown or a reddish brown, and the labels are typically handwritten.
