Pietro Giovanni Mantegazza, c. 1730-1803

The Mantegazza family was famous for making instruments and collected them as well. They were active in Milan from 1760 to 1824. Pietro Giovanni Mantegazza is the most famous luthier in the entire family.

He studied with Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi, and worked with his younger brother Francesco Mantegazza in Milan. In the 1760s and 70s, he made a lot of violins. Around the year 1790 he started making a series of violas using patterns that were stylistically Amati. They appear more classical than instruments he made prior to this period of his life. Pietro’s violas are some of the most famous in all of viola history.

They devoted more of their time to the instrument trade and repairing instruments than actually working as luthiers. There are historical accounts of him and his brother repairing instruments for Count Ignazio Alessandro Cozio di Salabue (1755-1840), and the count even ordered a white instrument from Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, who hired the brothers to help him with the varnish.
